Parents frequently face difficult challenges when making educational decisions on behalf of their children with special needs. Bacon Wilson can help you communicate and achieve your goals for your special needs child who attends public or private school. We help parents understand their rights under Chapter 766, Section 504 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We can also help you with:
- Reviewing educational records and advising whether your child may be entitled to publicly funded evaluations
- Seeking additional services such as reading and/or math tutors, speech, occupational and physical therapy, or counseling paid for by the school district
- Accompanying you to Individual Education Plan (IEP) team meetings to represent your interest and explain state and federal procedural protections
- Negotiating changes to IEPs to ensure your child receives a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment appropriate for him or her
- Facilitating requests for reasonable accommodations such as additional time for testing, appropriate classroom supports for students with attention and behavioral issues, and providing a safe environment for students with life-threatening health conditions such as severe food and/or environmental allergies
- Arranging for special transportation with appropriate support to be provided by the school district Reviewing records to assess whether appropriate manifestation of disability reviews have been held for special education students who have been suspended or expelled
- Filing hearing requests with the Bureau of Special Education Appeals (BSEA) to challenge inadequate services offered or provided by the student’s public school
- Attending mandatory Resolution Meetings to attempt to settle BSEA complaints
- Representing parents at BSEA hearings by submitting evidence, examining witnesses and presenting persuasive legal authority to support your position
