Regional Law Firm Attorneys Honored as 2012 SuperLawyers & Rising Stars

Springfield, MA - The Springfield-based regional law firm of Bacon Wilson, P.C. is pleased to announce that five of their attorneys have been distinguished as New England "SuperLawyers" and six of their attorneys have been distinguished as "Rising Stars" in Boston Magazine. Determined by the results of 63,000+ ballots distributed to lawyers in New England, only 5% of New England's lawyers were honored as SuperLawyers. They were identified for their background, experience, professional achievement and peer recognition. The Rising Stars are under 40 years old or have been practicing law for less than ten years. Less than 2.5 percent of New England lawyers were named Rising Stars. The following Bacon Wilson attorneys were honored:
Attorney Paul R. Salvage is the co-chairman of the firm's insolvency department. His practice deals with sophisticated workout and bankruptcy matters, representing both creditors and individuals or companies facing financial difficulties. His additional specialties include creditor's rights, business/corporate and real estate. He has served on the First Circuit Court of Appeals Bankruptcy Judge Merit Selection Panel and is a frequent lecturer before various bar association groups on the areas of reorganization and creditor/debtor rights. He is a former chairman and member of the Town of Longmeadow Appropriations (finance) committee. Salvage earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Vermont He lives in Longmeadow.
Attorney Gary L. Fialky is chairman of the firm's corporate department. His practice is concentrated in business and banking law, with an emphasis on business formations, mergers and acquisitions. Additional specialties include health care, trusts and estates and real estate. Fialky is the founder and co-chair of the Omar T. Pace Recognition Dinner for the Western MA Region of the American Cancer Society. He is also a past president of the board of directors of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and formerly served on the board of trustees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Fialky earned his LL.M from Boston University, his J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, and his B.A. from American International College. He lives in Springfield.
Attorney Michael B. Katz is co-chairman of the firm's bankruptcy department. His practice is concentrated in business and insolvency law, and he has played a significant role in numerous successful reorganization cases. He also handles sophisticated healthcare law matters, and is general counsel to many businesses including medical practices and individual physicians. His additional specialties include creditor's rights, commercial and corporate law. Katz was the clerk and a board member of the United Way of Pioneer Valley, and he served as chairman of the Annual Campaign for 2007. He is also a past president and current member of the board of directors of the Jimmy Fund Council of Western Massachusetts, and he serves on the Jimmy Fund Advisory Committee for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Katz earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School and his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts. He lives in Longmeadow.
Attorney Paul H. Rothschild is chairman of the firm's litigation department. His practice is concentrated in general litigation, as well as personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, and employer/employee disputes. He represents a number of employers in general business and higher education, providing advice on issues relating to termination, discrimination, and avoidance of disputes. Rothschild is a past president of the Hampden County Bar Association, and a member of its board of directors, and former president of the Springfield Jewish Community Center and member of its board of directors. He earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law and his A.B. from Dartmouth College. He lives in Longmeadow.
Attorney Hyman G. Darling is chairman of the estate planning and elder law department, and he is recognized as the area's preeminent estate planner. His areas of expertise include all areas of estate planning, probate and elder law. Darling is past president of the Hampden County Estate Planning Council and also a Certified Elder Law Attorney. In addition, he is a past president of the Hampden County Bar Association, he teaches law at Bay Path College, and is an adjunct professor at Western New England University School of Law - LLM program, teaching Elder Law. He serves on the boards of many charitable entities, including the National Planned Giving Committee of the American Cancer Society and as chair of the Baystate Health Systems Professional Advisors Committee. He is a frequent lecturer on various estate planning and elder law topics at both the local and national levels. He earned his J.D. from Western New England University School of Law and his A.B. from Boston University. Darling lives in Longmeadow.
Attorney Gina M. Barry is a member of the estate planning and elder law department whose practice includes sophisticated estate planning issues including pet estate planning. Additional areas of focus include guardianship, conservatorship, planning for long-term care and residential real estate. She is a 5-time recipient of the SuperLawyers Rising Stars distinction, founder of a non profit called Joy of Jasper, a recipient of the Top Five Business Women in Western Mass for 2010 from Western MA Women's Magazine, the 2005 "Woman of the Year" distinction from the Women Business Owners Alliance, the "Up and Coming Lawyer 2004" distinction by MA Lawyers Weekly, the Girl Scouts 2008 Woman of Distinction award, and BusinessWest's "40 Under Forty" award in 2009. She also authors many estate planning and elder care articles. Barry earned her J.D, cum laude, from Western New England University School of Law, her B.A., magna cum laude, from Westfield State College and her A.A. with High Honors from Holyoke Community College. She lives in Holyoke.
Attorney Justin H. Dion focuses on insolvency, business and financial matters. In addition to handling Chapter 7, 11 and 13 bankruptcies, he also does financial planning, conducts foreclosures, and handles collection matters for lenders, as well as practicing non-profit and real estate law. He is on the board of directors of Square One, and the Longmeadow Educational Excellence Foundation, as well as a regular participant in the Mass Bar Association Western New England School of Law Dial-A-Lawyer program. Attorney Dion teaches extensive law classes at Bay Path College and Western New England University School of Law, and is the author of several bankruptcy articles and has been published in the prestigious American Bankruptcy Institute and Western New England University Law Review. He earned his J.D., Magna Cum Laude, from Western New England University School of Law, his Master of Arts in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University, and his B.S. in Psychology with a specialization in research, Cum Laude, from Southern Connecticut State University. Attorney Adam J. Basch is a member of the litigation department whose areas of practice include construction litigation, personal injury, general litigation and commercial litigation. He is the former secretary of the Hampden County Bar Association and serves as a member of the Wilbraham Planning Board and the United Way Allocation Committee. He teaches litigation and business law at Baypath College and is the author of numerous construction and general litigation articles. Basch earned his J.D. from Western New England University School of Law and his B.A from Union College. He lives in Wilbraham.
Attorney Todd C. Ratner is a member of the estate planning/elder law department whose practice includes sophisticated estate planning issues. Additional areas of practice include commercial and residential real estate together with general business and corporate law. Ratner serves on the boards of many charitable entities including co-chair the Alzheimer’s Association Tri County Partnership, is a graduate from the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Great Springfield, Inc.'s Leadership Institute 2007 and he taught elder law at American International College. He is a frequent lecturer and he has written numerous business, estate planning and real estate articles. Ratner earned his J.D. from The Pennsylvania State University School of Law, his MBA from Boston University Graduate School of Management and his B.S from Babson College. He lives in Longmeadow.
Attorney Benjamin M. Coyle is a member of the firm's business & corporate, estate planning & elder, litigation, municipal departments. He is a former team coordinator for the Springfield MA Relay for Life. Coyle earned his J.D. from Western New England University School of Law and his B.S.B.A. from Western New England University. Attorney Kevin V. Maltby is a 4-time recipient of this distinction and concentrates his practice in the area of litigation, criminal defense, and employment law. He is a former prosecutor for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office with extensive jury trial and court room experience. Maltby is a member of the adjunct faculty at Bay Path College in the Legal Studies Department where he has taught litigation, advanced litigation, criminal law, and evidence. He has written numerous articles about employment law and social media policy in the workplace. Maltby also was the recipient of the 2012 Hampden County Bar Association Access to Justice Pro Bono Publico Award for his vision and implementation of the Springfield District Court Lawyer for the Day program. He earned his law J.D. from Suffolk University Law School and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts. He lives in Longmeadow.
